TERS — Ready or Not ?

چکیده

microscopy (SPM) for nano-scale imaging with confocal Raman spectroscopy for chemical characterization. Challenges with tip quality, optical alignment, consistency and speed, however, have made the technique difficult and complex. New instrumentation is addressing these challenges, allowing TERS to migrate from pure research to routine laboratory analysis. These systems provide correlated nano-scale Raman imaging, enabling scientists to visualize, chemically characterize and implement change, even at the single-molecule level. As a result, TERS is extending nano-Raman imaging applications from conventional polymers and industrial constituents to a wide array of organic molecules, as well as to the more unusual carbon-based, two-dimensional and semiconducting nanomaterials. In the life sciences, TERS is expanding into the investigation of nucleic and amino acids.

Exclusion of small terminase mediated DNA threading models for genome packaging in bacteriophage T4

Tailed bacteriophages and herpes viruses use powerful molecular machines to package their genomes. The packaging machine consists of three components: portal, motor (large terminase; TerL) and regulator (small terminase; TerS). Portal, a dodecamer, and motor, a pentamer, form two concentric rings at the special five-fold vertex of the icosahedral capsid. Powered by ATPase, the motor ratchets DN...

The chemical origin of enhanced signals from tip-enhanced Raman detection of functionalized nanoparticles.

Here we present results that investigate the origins of signals observed in tip-enhanced Raman (TERS) measurements of functionalized nanoparticles. Surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) is known to give the largest enhancements in gap junctions. Similarly, gap-mode TERS also produces significant enhancements. The methodology developed here provides gap-mode like enhancements in TERS measurem...

Tip-Enhanced Raman Voltammetry: Coverage Dependence and Quantitative Modeling.

Electrochemical atomic force microscopy tip-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (EC-AFM-TERS) was employed for the first time to observe nanoscale spatial variations in the formal potential, E0', of a surface-bound redox couple. TERS cyclic voltammograms (TERS CVs) of single Nile Blue (NB) molecules were acquired at different locations spaced 5-10 nm apart on an indium tin oxide (ITO) electrode. Analys...

Tip-enhanced Raman spectroscopy: near-fields acting on a few molecules.

Tip-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (TERS) is a very powerful variant of surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS). In a sense, TERS overcomes most of the drawbacks of SERS but keeps its advantages, such as its high sensitivity. TERS offers the additional advantages of high spatial resolution, much beyond the Abbe limit, and the possibility to correlate TER and other scanning probe microscope imag...

Rational fabrication of a gold-coated AFM TERS tip by pulsed electrodeposition.

Reproducible fabrication of sharp gold- or silver-coated tips has become the bottleneck issue in tip-enhanced Raman spectroscopy, especially for atomic force microscopy (AFM)-based TERS. Herein, we developed a novel method based on pulsed electrodeposition to coat a thin gold layer over atomic force microscopy (AFM) tips to produce plasmonic TERS tips with high reproducibility. We systematicall...
